What is Mood Boarding?
You may find that we mention and offer mood boards for our design services. Below we have provided an introduction to mood boarding, for those that are unfamiliar with them.
Mood Boards
A mood board is a collage-style composition board that consists of color swatches, images, typography samples, and samples of objects. It is used as a tool to visually illustrate the mood/direction/style a designer intends to apply within their project.
This works as a communication tool for the client, designer, and design team to have samples and examples to reference to. It also helps confirm that the designer’s vision is in line with what the client expects. Since mood boards visually explain certain design concepts and ideas, the design process can move forward with both designer and client feeling more confident about what direction the final product will take.
Mood boards are intended to be more of an abstract guideline than a literal example. Sample images are used to relay the feel desired instead of showing specific items to be used in the design. The mood board may be used as a point of reference in the design process, but mainly for colors, fonts, or inspiration.
